How to Build a Game of War Rally Trap For Cheap!

If you want to play Game of War but not spend a great deal of money chasing expensive core sets and research then this article is for you!  If you want a way to trap those pesky mean rally leaders tormenting you alliance then this too is an article for you!

I have a 110 billion power account that I no longer consider my main.  I now spend most of my time on a sub 10 billion power account that I use as a rally trap.

In the above example I lost a few T1 traps for under 50k power loss.  I was able to recover those traps for no speed up cost since T1 is instant salvage.  So, how can you get one of these fun trap accounts?

Building the Trap

Here’s what you will need to trap the Hardest Hitting Rally Leader’s in Game of War:


  • Tier 4 Normal
  • Traps Tier 1 Normal – just above war bricks.
  • Defense Tree to Troop Defense Debuff Resistance 9
    • Some Kingdoms do not have this released yet in their Defense tree.  Be patient its coming.  Instead get your Defense Debuff Resistance from Kinoichi Kunai – use at least 2 until your defense tree is added.  Then use just one.
  • Total Research Power should around 400 million power.


  • Frostlord’s Will (Helm)
  • Imperial Mantle (Armor)
  • Imperial Greaves (Feet)
  • Frostlord’s Shatter star (Weapon)
  • Frostlord’s Wielders (Accessory)
  • Kunoichi’s Kunai (Accessory)
  • Kunoichi’s Kunai (Accessory)

Alternative Gear

  • Sola’s Paladin and Golden Shogun Gear
    • This set is a troop specific defense set that can be used to counter specific rally types i.e. infantry, ranged, cavalry.
  • Colossus Gear
    • This set is easily the best general defense gear set in game.  However, it costs the most to attain currently in game. Compare defense of each piece to the current item’s defense you have and upgrade accordingly.


  • Defense – 25% Defense
  • Shadow Gem – 12.5% Defense, 12.5% Troop Attack Debuff
  • Gem of Honor – 12.5% Defense, 12.5% Troop Attack Debuff (Yes, its the same as Shadow Gem but can equip both)
  • Gem of Protection – 25% Enemy Rally Attack Debuff (The use of this Gem is controversial.)  I use two of them to negate enemy’s Rally Attack from skills, but I’m still testing if I should use more against the occasional rally leader stacking Rally Attack boost gems.  If you have data concerning this please leave a comment below.

Better gems have been released with more Defense boost.  If you are able to obtain them use them!  Defense is most the important stat for this trap set but I’ve tried to provide the minimum requirements in this article to trap with minimal research power.

Troop Counts

  • 20 million of each Tier 4 type – Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry
  • 240 million of each Tier 2 type.
  • All Tier 1/2 Traps, Spikes, Archer Tower, Boiling Tar, Turret, Snares, Steam Cannon.
  • Troop Power will be 4 billion and above depending whether you go for an Ares trap or not.

With the release of Artemis you may need to increase troop numbers slightly more to around 800-900m.

Very important:  Please be aware of the Game of War Nerf.  If you train too many lower-tiered troops you will suffer a penalty to your troop’s stats and suffer great losses upon taking a hit of any kind.


  • Defense – 125% or 175% obtained in one of the few packs required to reach the limits of this trap setup.
  • Attack Debuff – 125% or 175% see above.

Buildings Setup

Once you have reached Stronghold 21 and unlocked Tier 4 its time to train your Tier 4 army.  It is my recommendation that you check the Forge to see if you can craft any Economy Sets for Troop Training boosts such as Generals or Grand Marshalls Set gear.  This will save you many days of speeds ups. However, if you are unable to craft these items don’t worry.  You can still train an army relatively cheaply.  You may have picked up some Troop Training boosts or Items along the way building your Stronghold 21.  Check your inventory for Prometheus’ Boon (Lvl 30) it provides +18% Training Speed.  Also, check for Hades’ Helm (Lvl 40).  It will provide another +12% Training Speed.

Next, you want to build a balance of Villas and Barracks. Villas will reduce your Training Speed and Barracks will allow you train more troops at once.  Personally, I just used Training Speed Boosts of 30 – 50 % from the packs and Troop Queue Boosts of 500%-1000% with all Barracks and got it done in a few hours.  It likely cost me a bit more but I got it done in time for the Kill Event that night.

Altar Boost

Once you are satisfied with the number of Tier 4 and Tier 2 I recommend knocking down any building you won’t need to trap and replacing it with Level 21 Barracks to add more Base Defense.  Base Defense is boosted by your Altar and Altar Skills.  So, if you have 20 Barracks at level 21 it will provide 200% more Defense,  20 x 10% Defense.  With an active Altar it will boost this by 80%! Let’s do some math.  Say you have 300% base Defense from Research and add another 200% from your Barracks for a total of 500%.

Now, just before the Kill Event execute one of your Executable Farm Heroes using an Instant Execution from a Cheap Pack you purchased.  Last night, I got one for $19.99 around time of Kill Event.  Not bad for a full night of fun with friends trapping and killing Rally Leader Heroes who have spent literally tens of thousands of dollars to try to burn my few hundred dollar account.  I am also one of them.  I know how frustrating it is!  The active Altar Boost will provide you an additional 400% Defense!  This is the best boost in the Game!

Countering Artemis Core Set

Currently, Artemis Core Set is ripping through people with under 700 million troops and this type of account.  So, if you wish to stop Artemis you will need to beef up a bit to over 800 million troops keeping a close eye on the Nerf limitations of Tier 2 troops or grab some better gear items such as Shogun or Paladin pieces.  Shogun works best as a set due to each slot piece containing a different troop boost.  The accessory is nice as it provides Infantry and Ranged Defense which will counter Artemis (Ranged) and Ares (Cavalry) the two of the hardest hitting rally core sets you will face.   If you equip it against Nike, however, its pretty useless since it provides no Cavalry Defense. For Nike Core Set you need Cavalry Defense.  So look for those stats among Paladin and Golden Shogun.

However, with this setup you will have no problem capping heroes from Poseidon (Ranged), Zeus (Infantry), Frostbitten (Cavalry), Dragon Bone (Ranged), and any other missile core set released prior to Dragon Bone.

Ares Core Set

Ares Core Set has the following maximum boosts with Gems:

  • Cavalry Attack – 3,762%
  • Troop Attack – 1,984%
  • Combined Attack – 5,746%
  • Troop Attack Debuff – 729%
  • Infantry Attack Debuff – 600%
  • Ranged Attack Debuff – 550%
  • Cavalry Attack Debuff – 600%
  • Ranged Defense Debuff – 282%
  • Defense Debuff – 1767%
  • Health Debuff – 1450%

That is quite an arsenal of stats!  Where to begin? It has a combined attack of nearly 6,000% with 1800% Defense Debuff.  This requires a considerably different trap setup than required against Poseidon and Zeus which have considerably less Attack but more Defense Debuff.

So, this brings me to the counter part.  Since Ares has considerably more Attack but less Defense Debuff than we enountered in Zeus and Poseidon it is my recommendation to use no more than one Kinoichi Kunai Troop Defense Debuff Resistance item.  Instead equip straight Defense items such as Frostlord’s Wielders, Barbarian Spear or the best against Ares, the Rising Tekko.

Rising Tekko Stats

  • Infantry Defense – 450%
  • Ranged Defense – 450%
  • Troop Attack – 35%
  • March Speed Debuff – 25%

Rising Tekko is a great equipment item against Ares, Poseidon, or Frostbitten because it counters so well against Ranged and Cavalry missile attack core sets.

Editor’s Note: If it is your desire to stop any core set that comes your way then it may be a wise investment to go ahead and finish the crafting tree.  You will add considerably more Defense from the fourth slot gems, 245% and have the ability to craft cores with specific troop defense to more easily counter these massive attack core sets.  However, this is a subject matter for a different article.  I digress.

This pack is available for $9.99.  Its perfect for training Tier 2 or Tier 4.  Currently, the slowest I train a full Tier 4 queue of 736,000 troops is 736 days.  So, the big packs touting 25,000 days is mostly useless for us.  The speed ups in those packs are 2,000 days and 1,000 days.  You will be wasting hundreds of days of Speed ups when training your army.

So, to sum up.  When choosing packs to build your trap you want to first purchase some Amazon Coins.  If you need assistance let me know, but its crucial in building a Cheap Trap.  Next, you want to find packs that contain the correct speed up size 200, 300, 400, 500 days max.  Also, you want the packs that contain Imperial Dragon and Frostlord’s primarily.  The packs that contain Golden Shogun are a nice bonus if you are after that Rising Tekko.

Alliance Cooperation and Idea Sharing

Don’t forget about your Alliance mates!  Let them know what you are up to and get them involved in the process.   You will likely discover their excitement when learning that a new Trap is coming online to provide massive points in upcoming Kill Events.  Also, your Rally Leaders can rally the Heroless Strongholds you just capped!

GoW Rally Trap Results

Here are some results of my Trap these past several months!

This was a maxed Hero Zeus rally, but as I recall the rally leader had pretty poorly Gem’d set with few Defense Debuff Gems.  My 2 x Kinoichi Kunai did some great work against this rally.  I lost 9,766 T1 at 353k Troops at the time.


This is a Poseidon Rally from our last Kill Event.  I had just taken the below Ares Core Set Rally but was able to retrain a few million troops in time to take this Poseidon hit.  When I got the Rally Notification offline I wasn’t sure how much time I had left till Rally impact.

So, I boosted Defense 125% and Attack Debuff 125% however, the 1 minute Defense boost ran out before rally hit.  I was switching my gear from Ares set up to Poseidon set up with more Kinoichi Kunai.  No presets on the account so have to manually swap them!  Cheap traps have their negatives too, no presets!  I was still able to capture Hero with around 398m troops.



Ares strikes again!  I’m getting closer to capping this ferocious Core Set.  I need to get a Rising Tekko or boost more troops.  Basically, I need more Defense or more Troops.  To get more Defense requires either unlocking Fourth Gems in the crafting tree to add the 245% Defense with 7 of the 35% Defense Gems.  I also have some room to upgrade to the 35% Defense Gems which will provide around 140% boost.  But I hope to obtain a Rising Tekko very soon with these $20 packs I pick up every week or two for a Kill Event.  Not bad spending $20.00 a week to keep up with Rally Leaders who spend $1,000s/week for Cores, Research, Buildings and Boosts.

Here is a breakdown of my Troops.  This trap started when Zeus (Infantry) and Frostbitten (Cavalry) were tearing it up!  Then I had to adjust numbers to counter the harder hitting Poseidon (Ranged).  Finally, we have a harder hitting Cavalry Core Set of DOOM in Ares!  I’ve had to adjust once again to counter Ares.

If you wish to be able to withstand anything thrown at you then its required to have a somewhat balanced mix of troops.  However, if you decide you will only take a specific troop type rally such as Ranged, then train your army accordingly.  I have an Alliance mate that capped an Ares Rally over the weekend at just 900 million power and Normal Equipment.  How?  She’s all Infantry using Infantry Attack and Infantry Defense Normal Gear items.  It definitely shocked the maxed out Rally Leader burning a thousand dollar Core set.

Defense Research Tree: Required for Rally Traps

Defense Research Tree: Rally Traps

Defense Tree is a must have for any serious rally trap player.  The benefits of this tree for capping heroes of rally leaders are the best bang for your buck.

Defense Tree Stats

The Defense Research Tree adds 749.85 million power at a cost of 30,000 days of speed with ~530% Research Speed (Chancellor’s Set), 25 helps, and 10% Game of War research speed boost.  Also, it costs around 6 billion wood, stone, food and 11 billion ore, and 11 billion silver.

  • Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry Defense – 131%
  • Trap Defense – 150%
  • Troop Defense – 131%
  • Enemy Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry Attack Debuff – 25%
  • Embassy Troop Capacity – 850,000
  • Trap Capacity – 250,000
  • Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry Health – 60%
  • Troop Health – 100%
  • Enemy Health Debuff – 20%
  • Hospital Capacity – 200%
  • Troop Attack Debuff Resistance – 20%
  • Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry Defense Debuff Resistance – 30%
  • Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry Health Debuff Resistance – 30%
  • Troop Defense Debuff Resistance – 20%
  • Infantry, Ranged, Cavalry Attack Debuff Resistance – 30%

Defense Debuff Resistance

The key ingredients for a rally trap is Defense and Defense Debuff Resistance.  This tree provides both with significant amounts.  It provides the only Debuff Resistances of any research tree.  This plays a major role in creating the best rally trap.

Also, the specific troop defense debuff resistances provide an additional 30%.  What this means is any attacker that tries to debuff your infantry defense will only do so at 70% of their debuff percentage.  In other words, if the attacker uses a Nike set with 1000% infantry defense debuff, with this tree completed that debuff is reduced to 700% defense debuff.  This tree just saved you 300% defense to your infantry defense!

Troop Defense Debuff Resistance is also a major advantage with all the new deadly core sets.  This tree provides 20% resistance to troop defense debuff.  Again, this means that if an attacker uses Ares with 2,000% defense debuff this tree will reduce that to 1,600% saving you 400% defense!

For less than 800 million power this tree is definitely a must have for any serious trap player.  Wonder players will also seek this tree to stand any chance holding the wonder or super wonder.  Comparing this tree costs to other research tree it is relatively cheap.  It is of the old generation of trees when it didn’t take thousands of days to complete one skill.

Solo March Trap: Beating the Biggest with the Smallest! 

Building a successful and economic solo march trap is not difficult.  It can be completed in a relatively short amount of time.  Several key factors are required for a solo march trap.

What is a Solo March Trap?

First, we need to look at the scoring system for Game of War:

Simply put, a solo march trap is a stronghold that entices outlanders to attack it with solo marches, but usually will not allow itself to be hit by a rally.  The idea is to score more points than the enemy in each battle.  For instance, if an outlander sends 400,000 T4 and the solo trap kills them all, this will score 40,000,000 points in a troop tier kill event, or 00,000 points in a power event.  Typically, a solo trap will hold lower-tiered troops such as T2 which are 8 power each and for each in a troop tier kill event they are worth 5 points if killed, or 1 point LOL if hospitalized.

How Should They Be Built?

The stat most important for a solo trap is defense.  Defense increases exponentially as your army’s numbers increase.  A solo trap will have superior numbers than the incoming solo march.  Therefore, a combination of multitudes of troops and high defense will allow your relatively small power stronghold to take hits from the best cores available in the game from the most powerful players in Game of War.  If built correctly a solo trap of can outscore any player in game.

Choosing the Correct Gear Items

Frostlord, Imperial Dragon, Golden Shogun, and Paladin of Sola provide tremendous boost to Defense.  These sets should be your focus points.  Look through these by set in crafting to see if you can craft any.  If you are close to an item note the materials needed and head to combine and see if you can obtain the mats you need to craft it to a decent level.  I say decent level because it may not require level 6 to be effective.  On my solo trap I’m using several level 5 Frost Lord items and having terrific results.  I’ve not spent much money on my solo trap maybe $100.00.  I chose a $50.00 pack that had Frostlord equipment and chests in it so I could get several purple items crafted.  I’m having a lot of fun with it!

Which Troop Types to Train

In order to keep your power low but have enough troops to defeat any rally leader, some solo traps are choosing one troop type.  For instance, a popular gear set may be Infantry based such as Nike.  So you could train all Ranged troops and be incredibly difficult to burn for an Infantry core solo or even a rally.  You will then build traps to that are also strong versus infantry.

Beware, however, of an Ares or some other cavalry rally as it will definitely destroy your trap.

An Ode to the Best Trap I’ve Ever Seen

So, how did SeeMorebutts take 22 rallies and become the best rally trap ever?

The name of the trap account in this blog has been changed. Why? Because he thinks no one will know what happened here yesterday, no one will spread the word about the story about to be told. Unfortunately, since he’s Canadian, he doesn’t get the whole “viral” spreading of information or cool stories or videos. To him, “Viral” just refers to infections he may or may not get from unprotected relationships with a Moose. I have changed the name of the trap to protect it’s anonymity, so henceforth, I will refer to the star of this blog, the “Trap Account” as MooseLuvR.

The setting: KvK Kill event vs #376. Just north of the Dahae Forest, MooseLuvR (name changed slightly to protect the somewhat innocent), a player I moderately can almost kind of stand despite the fact that he’s Canadian and obviously, well, not afraid to share that fact, sets up his trap, MooseLuvR in a strategic position and reinforces himself from his main account. He tells others in the alliance to reinforce, and many do, including some of my own troops.

KVK starts.

(Some time passes)

A rally is up, it’s fake, but we don’t know this. MooseLuvR figures it out and saves his cores. Other outlanders port in, and set a real rally this time. As the march approaches, we frantically alert him in alliance chat (and PM too) that this one is real…no response…..we’re worried. Did he LAG? Did he get booted from GOW? Is he drunk on some Canadian beer? Was he involved in some sort of flirting ritual with his sled dogs? Was he distracted by his Ice Hole being frozen over? We didn’t know.

The Rally struck…..and a little red icon appears over his troops returning to the attacking army. WOO HOO! He took the rally, wiped it out! (Turns out the guy was a 7 Billion player, and though I may lose track of the specific order of who attacked and lost their hero in which order, it’s all irrelevant because I’m writing it like this, so read it as such, and let’s all just move on with the story please!…sheesh…)

Almost immediately, another rally comes up, same alliance, someone else will attack and save the hero! It marches, and again, radio silence from MooseLuvR. We watch, squeezing our collective phones, ipads and computer mouses, ready immediately to send rss if needed.

The rally marches….we all fall silent…..the only sound heard was the heart beating out of my chest…thump thump…….thump thump……the rally gets close…….thump thump…thump thump……the rally hits….the pause where we know nothing….no notification, no smoke or fire, nothing,,,,,,thumpthumpthumpthumpthumpthump……And like the anti climactic feeling you get when you see a “Wet Paint” sign, and touch the surface only to find it’s actually dry, we find he ate ANOTHER rally, and no troops returned, hero captured.

And then, the worst thing that could happen…happened…..

Someone called out that we should get more reinforcements in as a few had been lost in the battle. I recalled mine, intending to put another full march back in, but someone else beat me to it….little did I know that this would be the last battle report I’d get to see from MooseLuvR…..and that saddens me….as it must sadden all of you as well…

But then we sat and watched as more outlanders showed up. Other members with cores, a rally pops up, it marches…..poof! Gone. 3 heroes captured, all from the same alliance…surely they’ll stop, as they KNOW they’ve been beaten, yes? No.

Next thing they try is a 2 alliance simultaneous rally. MooseLuvR is excited to try his skills out and see how he does! (Side note here, How great is our alliance, we were sending him so much RSS inbetween rallies that he had to ask us to stop, as he couldn’t see the rally coming on his watchtower….lol… He was MORE than prepared with RSS on hand for instant healing! Good job MooseLuvR! )

The rallies are going to hit just seconds apart…will MooseLuvR be able to heal in time? Will the extra lag from scouts and multiple rallies screw him up? Who shot JR? What was with the Smoke Monster on LOST? Am I asking too many questions?

No! He took them both, and though he didn’t wipe them out, they were sure and solid victories!

What would they do? Will they continue to try to save their captured heroes? Seems the answer is YES. (Pressing the FastForward button for those of you already losing interest)

Dual rally, both hit, 1st one loses hero, 2nd one gets hurt, but some come home, no hero. Why?

A slight tangent.
Remember a LONG time ago when MZ graciously gave us the option to turn off the “Toast Notifications” and all rejoiced in the land, we were happy with MZ that we didn’t have to research that feature, or buy it in a gold pack….And then like a week later they took that option away? Likely because they realized it helped us in some small way) Well….

After the 1st rally, MooseLuvR hero leveled up, and while going to press the instant heal button to take the 2nd rally, it blocked him off, meaning he got hit with the 2nd rally with hospitals filled. Bummer. Still won, but didn’t get that one more hero…

Last I saw, MooseLuvR was holding heroes of 7 fairly big players (ranging from 4-12 Billion I believe)

I believe the final total was 22 rallies landed on MooseLuvR. 22. TWENTY TWO……..Veintidós…..zweiundzwanzig…..vingt-deux…..tuttugu og tvær…..스물 둘……বাইশ……amashumi amabili nambili….yeah….THAT many!

At one point, there was a 4 way rally on him, and he survived them ALL!

So tell me, have you heard any similar stories? I’m not sure about you, but I think after 2-3 rallies in a short period of time, I’d have said “Shield! I’m proud of myself!”

But that’s not what MooseLuvR did. He decided to keep going, pushing himself to the limit, seeing what he could take, how long he could go, how many heroes he could take.

And for that, his perseverance, his stubborness to keep going, his tenacity, his “cajones!” His unwillingness to give in and take the easy way out, to shield and take a mental break, is for THESE reasons that I’m completely disappointed in MooseLuvR.

MooseLuvR may have made some of the most selfish moves I’ve ever seen. Those poor outlanders didn’t have their heroes, while their cores were running, they couldn’t get them back, no matter how hard they tried. I see this whole situation as Big Bad MooseLuvR, the 6 foot tall, 200 pound 6th grader who shaves and has a girlfriend in college, taking the kickball away from a group of kindergartners….holding the ball up out of their reach so they cant play, 7 little kids jumping up and trying to get the ball back, MooseLuvR just standing there, holding the ball up, teasing them. If you watched that happening, how would YOU feel? Those outlanders just wanted to play the game and MooseLuvR took their toys away so they couldn’t play. Not nice MooseLuvR.

I am thinking of giving him some sort of an award. Like the Razzies give out awards for worst films, or the Darwin Awards give out awards (posthumously anyway) for dumbest ways to die, I will give out awards for both positive and negative events I witness or hear about.

All nominees must be GOW players.
All nominees should be nominated for GOW events only, not for idiocy in chat or outside of game. (We’ll make a new award for those)
All nominees should accept the award, should they win, graciously and with MUCH appreciation shown to Leg Humper, my Hero.

Events that may be eligible:
. Sending your hero to a tile with T1 Troops and getting it captured
. Sending a solo march instead of setting a rally and losing hero.
. Attacking a 5B or bigger player with a solo march, “burning him” because you killed a few million T1, and claiming VICTORY despite losing almost your whole T4 march.
. Getting zeroed in a kill event because you were too distracted by a) Real Housewives of New Jersey, or b) reading one of Leg Humpers blogs.

And the Ankle Biter award goes to………KINGDOM 376 for attacking and losing to a 1B trap surrendering at least 7 heroes, losing 22 straight rallies and just not stopping….. Congratulations Kingdom 376! *

Crowd goes wild, #376 doesn’t show up to accept the award. Leg Humper gets pissy because they didn’t follow the rules. Locks himself in his trailer. We haven’t seen him since.

  • Side note, despite winning 22 straight rallies. 376 DID win the KVK event. Several of my mails to 376 players to congratulate them were returned by some with “Wow, I didn’t think we’d win that one, even outside those rallies, I thought you guys crushed us!”

If I could give a personal ANKLE BITER award to MZ, for implementing a CITY that has no functionality, a game that lags when kill events are on but the players are to blame for having bad connections, removing the “Toast Pop up notifications” toggle for no real reason, and on and on and on, but MOST of all, for not providing a POINTS RESULTS for events. A LIVE LEADERBOARD would be perfect. Show us how close we are, show us who is leading the event so we can try to push at the end to catch up, or hold off the alliances or kingdoms behind us, how is this NOT a good idea? Several players from more than a half dozen kingdoms I’ve spoken to have stated they believe the outcomes of some the events are controlled by MZ for some reason, and releasing the scoring would make that impossible for them to do that any further. I don’t know if this is true, but until a live leader board is implemented, I’m sure there will be constant doubt in the legitimacy of the results.
